Florida State was recently rewarded for their continuing effort to enter the top 25 public universities in the country. The US News and World Report released their newest rankings for the best colleges in the country and rated Florida State University as the No. 40 best school among public universities. This is an improvement over last year’s ranking of No. 42 and marks a significant jump from FSU’s No. 46 ranking two years ago.
Florida State’s plan to join the top 25 public universities in the country by these rankings was part of President Eric Barron’s proposal to Gov. Rick Scott to grant FSU preeminence. Scott approved and appropriated million to FSU for the next five years to assist their effort to join the top 25 public universities. During that same time, the University of Florida made a similar proposal, asking for preeminence on the condition they strive to join the top 10 public universities. In the latest rankings, UF comes in as the No. 14 best school among public universities.
Among all private and public schools, Florida State increased their ranking from No. 97 to No. 91. This national universities category includes 281 institutions (173 public, 101 private and seven for-profit). Additionally, Florida State was honored by US News & World Report in a category called “A+ Schools for B Students.” In a press release from the university, FSU Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Garnett S. Stokes indicated that this category reflects Florida State’s commitment to the excellence of all of their students. The release also notes that incoming freshmen last fall had a 4.0 GPA on average during high school.
Florida State is not alone in their newest No. 40 ranking, as public universities such as Auburn University, the Colorado School of Mines and University of Massachusetts-Amherst share the No. 40 spot with FSU.
Leaders at the university have stressed that these rankings hold as much meanings to those applying for schools as those graduating the university.
“I think that it’s encouraging as well as a lot of recent graduates to know that their university is putting in so much work in the back end to ensure that when they graduate they they’re not just graduating with any other piece of paper,” SGA President Rosie Contreras said. “It’s going to mean something.”
In a previous interview with the FSView and Florida Flambeau, Barron echoed a similar sentiment, noting that these rankings impact FSU graduates and their ability to acquire a job.
“Even though the person on paper might be very similar to someone that comes from Florida State, and even the Florida State student might be stronger, but the employer is going to look at the same thing [and say], ‘Oh, this is a name brand here. That student must be a better student, must be a better employee, because look they went to Berkeley.’”
Barron could not be reached for new comment on the improved rankings as he is out of the state until Friday when he will return for the Board of Trustees meeting held on the same day.
Although the improvement could be a considered a small one, Contreras emphasized that the administration is doing all they can to improve the quality of education at Florida State. What holds FSU from making significant leaps isn’t the “graduation rates” or the “enrich undergrad experience for FSU students,” according to Contreras, but the resources available to the university.
“Because so much of our budget is tied inherently to the fiscal situation of the state that is obviously going to hold us back in terms of making that big jump from 42 to 27, for example,” Contreras said. “To me, I think it’s a positive reaffirmation that the direction we’re heading in is a good one.”

"I didn’t know it was being rescheduled," said FSU student Daniel Berger.
Florida State Athletic officials announced Wednesday that the National Championship Celebration is postponed. This comes after FSU Associate Athletic director Rob Wilson released a statement saying some players would not be able to attend the celebration due to travel plans.

"As long as they are still doing it I’m going to be there. I’m not that upset but I was kind of planning it into my Saturday," said Berger.
"I want to see all the players and especially the ones that are entering the draft because they are important and I’m okay with it," said FSU student Marcus Jordan.
While fans will have to wait for the official 2013 National Championship celebration, the United Way says their event, the Downtown GetDown is still scheduled and can be thought of as part one of the celebration.
"We are happy to announce that the Downtown GetDown will go on as planned Friday night January 17 at six o’clock on the Adams Commons so we hope people will join us," said President of United Way of the Big Bend Heather Mitchell.
Mitchell says fans can expect food and drink vendors, FSU cheerleaders as well as a great time for the family.
"This is our 15th year doing the Downtown GetDown series and so when this win happened we called FSU and said ‘Hey this is ranked as one of the top 5 things by ESPN to do before a home game, why don’t we do this while we celebrate the trophy coming here,’ so they loved the idea too," added Mitchell.
Fans say they wouldn’t miss the celebration for the world.
"I’m going to be there whatever time it is. We’re the Champs!"

The celebration is back on.
FSU will hold its community celebration of the Seminoles national college football championship and undefeated season on Feb. 1.
The event will be held at noon inside Doak Campbell Stadium. It’s free, as is parking, and will end by 2 p.m., FSU officials say. Stadium gates will open at 11 a.m. and Seminole Village on Langford Green will be open at 9 a.m.
The celebration had been scheduled for Jan. 18, but was postponed because of scheduling conflicts with key players.
Following the formal program, fans will be invited on to the field to meet and personally congratulate players. While on the field, FSU officials are asking that fans refrain from seeking autographs so the players have the chance to talk with as many team’s supporters as possible.
Following the event, 20,000 free commemorative posters will be given to fans as they exit the celebration.

In addition to the events beginning at noon, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. fans will get a chance to have their photos taken with the Dr Pepper Coaches’ Trophy on Langford Green and will be allowed to visit the Indoor Practice Facility where the Seminoles train. FSU officials say it also will be the only chance for fans to see the turf from the team’s road wins at Florida, the ACC Championship and the piece taken by linebacker Telvin Smith at the Rose Bowl on display in caskets at the Sod Cemetery before they are buried.
Those attending the event are asked to enter Doak Campbell through Gates B, C, D, F, G or X on the south side of the stadium by the Seminole Sport Shop and Unconquered statue. The normal bag policy for home games will be in effect. The Moore Center will not be open, so FSU officials say the best way to see the National Championship Trophy up close will be on Langford Green or during the official celebration.
