In his book, Field Guide to Cocktails, Rob Chirico claimed that 73 percent of Southerners have not actually tried a mint julep. That sounds like a made-up statistic, but it’s probably not far from accurate either. Here’s how you can reverse this alarming trend:

Mint Julep recipe: take 4 fresh mint sprigs, 2 1/2 oz bourbon whiskey, 1 tsp powdered sugar, and 2 tsp water. Muddle mint leaves, powdered sugar, and water in a julep cup. Fill the it with shaved or crushed ice and add bourbon. Top with more ice and garnish with a mint sprig. Serve with a straw.

The julep cup was my husband’s first great pottery idea. Actually, it was his second. The first was a microwave bacon cooker (which I have and will not make). Here are four of his gems.
