These past few days, you might have noticed something different: a hint of a smile on the mouths of your usually sour-faced classmates at 8 a.m., a dash of yellow and orange on the leaves, or perhaps a light breeze blowing the unmistakable scent of cinnamon through the sweltering air. As you walk into your favorite Starbucks, the twinkle in your barista’s eye confirms your suspicions: the Pumpkin Spice Latte has returned.

In its glorious ten years of existence, the Pumpkin Spice Latte has come to signify much more than a delicious cup of coffee. The cinnamon, nutmeg and clove flavors banish the remnants of a long hot summer and assure us that fall is finally on its way. With PSLs come cozy Goodwill sweaters, cool evenings, football games and millions of filtered Instagram photos (#pumpkinspice). One sip of that warm and welcoming espresso topped with whipped cream and you wonder how you went so long without it.

Natalie Collins, a junior at Florida State, orders the lovely latte on an almost daily basis.

“Since Starbucks only carries them for a limited time each year, it’s important to consume as many pumpkin-flavored things as possible,” Collins said. “Autumn is my favorite time of year and the PSL has definitely become synonymous with the season.”

The Pumpkin Spice Latte can be ordered in its traditional steaming hot form, as an iced beverage and even as a frappuccino, making it the perfect drink for any weather.

FSU senior and Starbucks barista Jennifer Lamb said that PSL season is the busiest, but most exciting time to work.

“Our customers just get so excited when the fall drink specials are back in stock,” Lamb said. “Despite how chaotic it gets, there’s still a positive energy that can only be attributed to the PSL.”

While pumpkin spice worship is extremely common in these times, there are the select few who wept for a different taste. The Salted Caramel Mocha and Chocolate Chai Tea Latte have also been introduced this week, providing a pumpkin-less option while still maintaining an autumn aroma.

Though Starbucks has made customers happy with all of their coffee concoctions, nothing can compare to the PSL’s cult following. In an effort to capitalize off of this obsession, Starbucks has introduced “PSL 10” gift cards and tumblers that are selling quickly in stores and online.

“The Pumpkin Spice Latte is a comfort and tradition people at this point. Sipping on a PSL while you’re studying has become just as important as carving jack-o’-lanterns on Halloween or stuffing yourself with turkey during Thanksgiving,” Collins said. “There’s just something that’s reassuring and soothing about it that we can’t get enough of.”

Why can’t you find me Franky, Doug?
Avi, what do you want me to do? I’m not a bounty hunter.
What about Tony?
Bullet-Tooth Tony.
Who’s Bullet-Tooth…

You silly fuck.
He’s a liability.
He’d find Moses and the burning bush.

You are gonna die, Tony!
He got shot six times, had the bullets moulded into gold.
I shoot you, you go down!

He has two in his teeth that Dad did, so he loves Dad.
Why don’t you fucking die?

He’s the best chance you got. Six times?
In one sitting.

You’re in trouble now.
Sounds promising. What are we waiting for?

Bonjour.

He’s bad to the bone, ain’t you, Tyrone?
Of course I am.
Tyrone’ll drive for us. He’s done a rally driving course.
Of course I have.
I don’t want that dog dribbling on my seats.

Your seats?
Tyrone, this is a stolen car, mate.
While I’m at the wheel, it’s my car…
…so stop that dog dribbling on my seats. All right?

I can’t believe you found it. Where’d it go?
It went back to the gyppos.
Shut up. And how could it find them?
Well, I don’t know. I’m not a dog, Sol.
Ask him.
It’s like he’s a fucking homing beacon.

Steady on the brakes.
I thought you said he could drive, Sol.
Don’t worry about me. Just worry about that dog on my seats.
All right?
What?
You said he was a getaway driver. What the fuck can he get away from?
Don’t worry about Tyrone. He can move when he has to.

Worry about getting us a gun.
What’s that?
This is a shotgun, Sol.
It’s a fucking anti-aircraft gun, Vincent.
I want to raise pulses, don’t I? – You’ll raise hell, never mind pulses.

That does not look like a bookies.
Why’d we stop here? What’s the matter with that space over there?
It’s too tight.
Too tight?
You could land a jumbo-fucking-jet in there.
Leave him alone. He’s a natural. Ain’t you, Tyrone?
Of course I am.

A natural fucking idiot. Tyrone, what’ve you done?
Yeah, Tyrone, what have you done?
Look, you hassle me, you see what happens.
It’s all right. No, don’t move it now.
People’ll see the damage. Why’d you do that?
I didn’t see it.

It’s a four-ton truck. It’s not like it’s a packet of fucking peanuts.
It was at a funny angle.
It’s behind you, Tyrone.
Whenever you reverse, things come from behind you.

Control that dog as well.
Get that dog off him. – Get it off me.
Give me that squeaky toy. It shut him up last time.
Don’t snatch.
He can’t swallow the whole ball.
Yeah.

— The Cultural Connection

Brought to world attention by Brad Pitt’s character Mickey in the popular 2000 film, Snatch, the term "Pikey" is a pejorative, slang term used mainly in the UK to refer to Irish travelers, gypsies, and people of low social class, groups who refer to themselves as "Pavees" and call their language Shelta.

Brought to the US during the late 19th century, the derivative "piker" is used even today in Appalachian America to refer to someone who is stingy, while in Australia it is used to mean someone who refuses to do something within a group.

Found in old English–remaining nearly unchanged through the centuries–pikey is strongly associated with itinerant life and constant travel, with pikey directly derived from pike which, during the 16th century meant to "go away from, or to go on" and related to the words turnpike (toll-road) and pike-man (toll-collector). The term probably applies directly to those who continually use the pike or turnpike road.

Linguists assume that pikey was probably in common use even during William Shakespeare’s lifetime, referenced in Andrew Boorde’s 1547 text Gypsy Politics and Social Change: "Egipcions be swarte and doth go disgsy’d in theyr apparel, contrary to other nacyons: they be lyght fyngered, and use pyking."

The Oxford English Dictionary traces the earliest use of pikey to The Times in August 1838, which referred to strangers who had come to the Isle of Sheppey as "pikey-men."

In 1847, J. O. Halliwell in his Dictionary of Archaic and Provincial Words recorded the use of pikey to mean ‘a Gypsy."

And in 1887, W. D. Parish and W. F. Shaw in the Dictionary of Kentish Dialect recorded the use of the word to mean "a turnpike traveller; a vagabond; and so generally a low fellow."

Likewise, Hotten’s Dictionary of Slang defines pikey as "to go away" and Pikey as a tramp or a Gypsy. He lists "pikey-cart" as an habitable vehicle suggestive of country life.

The Journal of the Gypsy Lore Society similarly agrees that the term pikey solely applied (negatively) to Gypsies; the connotation linking gypsies to petty theft, crime, and general low socioeconomic activities, as the text Understanding Representation states: "Pikey is one of the negative words associated with gypsies: people who fight and steal equals ‘pikeys.’ It includes fortune-tellers such as the famous Gypsy Rose Lee."

In the past century, then-US Senator Harry S. Truman compared the banking industry of the 1930s, whom he referred to as "pikers," to the notorious bank robber Jesse James. And during this same period, pikey was commonly applied to Irish travelers (who were also labeled "tinkers" and "knackers") and non-Roma Gypsies who followed a similar lifestyle.

In 2003 the Firle Bonfire Society burned an effigy of a family of gypsies inside a caravan after travelers damaged local land. The license plate on the caravan read P1KE, after which a storm of protests and accusations of racism followed. Twelve members of the society were subsequently arrested, but the Crown Prosecution Service decided there was insufficient evidence to proceed on a charge of "incitement to racial hatred." But in more recent years it has become a term of abuse and in the eyes of the law using it can even be deemed a racist offence, given its association with Irish travelers and Roma gypsies.

In the past decade, the definition of pikey became even looser and is sometimes used to refer to a wide section of the generally urban underclass of the country (in the UK generally known as chavs), or merely a person of any social class who "lives on the cheap" such and might be termed a Bohemian. As illustrated by the 2000 Guy Ritchie film Snatch, the negative English attitudes towards pikeys is an ongoing social reality of the British Isles even today.

The Oxford History of English notes that: "young people who use charver or pikey to identify a contemporary style of dress or general demeanor suggests an aimless "street" lifestyle, unaware of the Romany origin of the first or of connotation with ‘gypsy’ of the second. Pikey, formed from turnpike roads, as along with pikee and piker been used in the South East [sic: of England] especially since the mid-Nineteenth-Century to refer to itinerant people of all kinds and been used by traveling people to refer to those of low caste. Scally, a corresponding label originating in the North West of England, was taken up by the media and several websites, only to be superseded by chav."

A 2010 survey unearthed 127 synonyms, with "ned" favored in Scotland, "charver" in North East England, and "pikey" across the South of England.

.

— The Language

Pikey vocabulary and language is vastly dissimilar to English. For example, English/Pikey:

i, (me)

you, (mate)

he, (‘im)

she, (‘er)

it, (da)

we, (us)

you, (bheys)

they (dem)

van/pickup truck (tippidid)

sibling/brother (nuvver bruva)

look chaps (whoop/madey)

anything (nuf)

no (naan)

fit (buff ting)

yes (yeop)

mother (me-ma)

(Note: Although I grew up hearing Pikey terms, I am not over-all that familiar with it. So, please feel free to contribute corrections or further insight.)

Free is the second album by English rock group Free, recorded and released in 1969. The band had spent time touring after their debut album Tons of Sobs the previous year, and there is a marked difference in the musicianship of the band as well as Paul Rodgers’s voice. Individual members of the band seem less inclined to show off their musicianship — there are few of Paul Kossoff’s extended guitar solos that could be heard on some of the previous album’s tracks such as "Goin’ Down Slow." Whereas Tons of Sobs had been produced by Guy Stevens, Free was produced by the head of Island Records, Chris Blackwell.

Released:October 1969,October 2001 (Reissue)
Recorded:January–June 1969
Genre:Blues rock, hard rock
Label:Island

Personnel:
Paul Rodgers — vocals
Paul Kossoff — lead guitar
